This past week, Councilmember Richardson was invited to speak on the District 9 Participatory Budgeting (PB) Initiative at the 2016 Participatory Budgeting Conference held in Boston at Harvard University.

Joined by District 9 PB Delegates, the group was able to learn from other cities who have implemented PB, and share the successes of the Long Beach process.

"It was a humbling experience to sit in a room with individuals representing not only cities but nations that have embraced participatory budgeting as a gold standard for community empowerment. Our entire Long Beach delegation was able to see first hand what PB can become with the necessary investment both financially and socially from communities, non-profits and governmental agencies," said Joni Ricks Oddie of DeForest Park Neighborhood Association, who traveled to Boston for the conference.

Thank you to all who attended the conference and represented D9 so well!
The Creative Corridor Challenge to Beautify North Long Beach has been sweeping its way through Uptown, leaving behind inspirational imagery for generations to come. Since its "Project Submission Phase" in October 2015, the initiative has moved through its "Corridor Team Development Phase", leading to the "Project Execution Phase", which North Long Beach can visually grasp through volunteer painting opportunities and aesthetic.

Uptown saw the initial workings of its fourth Creative Corridor Challenge Mural, which captivates the word "Dream" among idea-provoking, ocean-touched colors and imagery. The mural causes a wonder that sparks ideas that can certainly become dreams of tomorrow.

Marcel "Sel" Blanco is the artist responsible for the mural design at 1639 E. Artesia blvd., an exceptional addition to North Long Beach's ongoing collection. In the forthcoming weeks, Blanco and community will combine their talents to put the remaining pieces in place, completing yet another mural to beautify Uptown.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Uptown Jazz Festival is back!

The 5th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival is making its way back to Uptown in style, featuring show-stopping headliners Goapele and DW3! Houghton Park will be filled with artistry and style on June 11th, with the festival lasting from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. North Long Beach residents and friends are invited to come and enjoy music, food, vendor booths, a Kids' Zone, and many surprises. Check out our full act lineup below.

While Rolling Stone magazine once called Goapele the “spiritual love child of Sade and D’Angelo,” her searing voice can be both sensuous and serious, often on the same song. After taking off six years from recording, Goapele has returned to the forefront of the music scene with Break of Dawn, a collection of sophisticated songs dealing with love, loss and all the life in between.
After a six-year hiatus, Goapele returns to the limelight with perhaps her most diverse and exciting project to date. Without a doubt, the beauty, tenderness and joyful music on Break of Dawn will make your day.

BoxCar 7

Boxcar 7 is a high-energy seven-piece group recently voted “The Best Band in Long Beach” by a city that knows jazz and blues. With a powerful horn section, a charismatic front man and a seasoned, funky rhythm section Boxcar 7 plays the best of classic R&B, soul, blues, swing and a bit of classic rock. We draw from the great music of artists including Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, BB King, Joe Cocker and many more.

Brown Suede

Urban Jazz band Brown Suede plays just as smooth as their name, delivering quality sounds. Based out of Los Angeles, CA, Brown Suede has jammed out in several of our local Long Beach events this past year, ranging from the State of the 9th District and the 4th Annual Uptown Latin Jazz & Blues Festival. Ludlow Creary is a prominent leader of the group, who has been active in the Southern California musical culture for several years.
